20 Miles of Fun
Today was our last long run before the marathon. It was 20 miles worth of fun. 20 miles, I have never thought I could or would even do. Since our group normally begins running at 7am, and since we haven't been in the best of shape lately. We decided to start at 6am. Well, we actually left the condo at 6:05 and the weather was pretty crappy. But it didn't last long, and the weather ended up being amazing. Things were going well on LSD until the moving traffic went to a dead lock. The 5-0 were directing everyone off of LSD which kind of pissed me off until I realized that there was a pretty bad accident. So we ended up not making it to our starting point until 6:40. So I grabbed my stuff, gave barb a kiss and went on my way. I was really freakin worried throughout the entire run, that my IT band would act up on me early. But luckily it didn't until later. Since, I was running alone, I felt like the cara groups were running me off the path. The best thing was for the 1st 8 miles, I was able to pace with many of the groups.
I was extremely happy with my 1st 14 miles, I felt like I was flying. I ended up blowing my CDC time out of the water. When I got to castaways, I took some preventative measures and put some biofreeze on my leg and fixed my "IT band" band which was still holding up. The coolest thing was when I was stretching, I turned to my right and saw a familar face, Nicole and Tom which was definetly needed. They were lookin awesome. It gave me a definetly needed boost. Tom did say something about satelites, and runners, which definetly confused me. Wow, I just realized that I say definetly to much, but whatever.
But like I was saying before, the 1st 14 miles went pretty well. Question for you all, have any of you randomly started singing a son, which you haven't heard in forever, and just stop dead in your tracks and think, where the hell did that come from. Well, that happened to me today when I was at buckingham fountain. I was listening to Eminems "Loose Yourself" on my Ipod and I started singing "You can't stop the beat" from the musical "Hairspray" which I saw with my in-laws and Barb last December. Once I realized what I was singing, I was like WTF, i am loosing my mind. I then went on my way, unfortunately with that song stuck in my head. I was really excited when I finally got to museum campus, because that meant the turn around was near and that my IT band had held up for 8.5 miles.
Since Barb and I started early, it felt kinda cool to be beating the extremely fast people in our group, for a little bit. As I was going back North, I saw many of the Boston bound people. But shortly many of them would pass me. At mile 14.76 according to my garmin, my biggest fear happened. My IT band started to get sore, and shortly very painful. Since, I didn't want to kill myself or injure myself more so close to the marathon, I decided to take it easy the last 5.24 miles. On my last run, it started to bother me at mile 8.5, so I am pretty happy that this time it happened a lot later. That tells me, that the way I am treating it is working pretty well. But it really did suck. I spent the rest of the run walking, or hobbling, combined with lite jogging. I spent majority of this time, cursing like a sailor. And I don't mean like a sail boat sailor, I mean like a pirate. OK, I am not making any sense, but it was pretty bad. Since our coaches had us run 8.5 miles south and another 8.5 miles north, that left 3 miles to do to complete the full 20. Once, I got back to wear I started, I didn't want to go ahead. But I forced myself to finish. So i hobbled to the 0 mile marker and back. I actually finished 20 miles, and I am really freakin excited.
Once, I got back, I had a PT from athletico stretch me out. It hurt like hell when she was doing it, but it worked. Since chiropractors and PT''s don't always get along it took a lot for me to get stretched out. But it was worth it. I still feel great and it has been hours since the run. Well alittle sore in the knee, but thats it. It has been a lot worse. I still can't believe I ran this far. Go me and everyone else who is putting their bodies through such hell. But it will be worth it in the end. After today, I know I will be able to finish Chicago.
