7am + 12 miles= One Fun Time

Today, at training we had 12 miles to do in the lovely 94 degree heat of Chicago. I could tell it was not going to be a good run at all when barb woke me up at 6:20am. I was not pleased at all. But we had breakfast, picked up Ta and went to training. Because of the heat they wanted to keep us close so they had us run from wilson to Bryn Mawr (0 mile marker) back to Wilson, then wilson to the waveland totem pole and back to wilson.

During the first three miles, I kept bitching about how I had to run this route again. It became a major mind game. My pace varied alot throughout the run from a straight run to a run/power walk, etc, etc. I realized today that I really hate running by the soccer field and the tennis courts because there is no shade.

Even though my overall run was not the best, I do find this run to be a success. Why? Because 6 months ago I would never have thought I could even run 1 mile, let alone 12. Today, I realized that I am actually going to be able to complete the marathon. Even though it was not the best run, I tried to stay positive for the rest of the run. Its funny how even though things aren't going the way you want them to go, if you stay positive and focused, you can do anything. I know it sounds like one of those NBC's "The More you know" public service annoucements, but I finally believed it.

Other than that, the last mile ended up being very interesting. Since I am a card carrying member of the turn sideways and disappear club, my last mile just zoomed by. But I ended up digging down deep and totally kicked some ass. Normally, my last mile always sucks, but this time it was my best. I got in a zone. Maybe it was because in my head I was combing many 80's and early 90's tv show theme songs. I will post it later. But my last mile was great, especially after I had just complete 11 other hard miles.

But since then, barb and I have been major dorks. We watched the end of the most horrible movie musical, From Justin to Kelly. We are big time reality tv whores, and it all started with American Idol. But we basically have been watching tv and laying on the couch recovering. I did experience my 1st ice bath ever. Wow, its freakin cold but it was well worth it.

Nice work. If you felt good after this run in this heat, the marathon will be a piece of cake.

Maybe your blog name should be 'The Out of Shape Sideways Guy'. Although the 'out of shape' part should probably be modified.

I can't believe you really watched that. Wait a minute ... yes I can. And yes, you are on your way to completing a marathon. You're such a badass. And of course, a dork for watching that movie.

Glad you took a first ice bath! They pretty much rule.

Watching movies like "From Justin to Kelly" is very dangerous after a long run, as escape from the couch is difficult.  Please be careful.
