True Hollywood Story of the Shamrock Shuffle

Well I finished my first face, and it wasn't that bad. It was actually kind of fun. I ended up with a time of 1:03:43. I placed 19598 out of 20408. And well, I'm kind of a little disappointed with my time. But what else can I do. Well, If you read my earlier post, last night I ended up getting myself a little drunk. This morning when I woke up, I wasn't feeling my best, but I got ready for the race anyway. Barb, Taylor and I ended up taking a cab to the race. We were kind of a little lazy this morning. But we went, waited, stretched and waited some more for the race to begin. It was very interesting to watch some of the hard core runners prepare. I felt kind of stupid, but oh well. It was also kind of funny to see how dressed up people get for these type of things. Can someone tell me why women put make up on to run? But I digress, once the race started, I felt kind of good. Barb, Taylor and I were doing pretty well at the start of the race. But as time went by, Barb ended up getting sick and as you might guess we had to slow down.

So we ended up letting Taylor run ahead and we took our time. We did a mixture of running, jogging and walking. I walked with barb for short amounts of time but encouraged her to pick up the pace. Throughout the race, I think barb felt like she was holding me back, so she kept saying just go ahead, I don't mind. But I didn't. I stayed with her the entire time. I'm not going to lie and say that it didn't cross my mind to just go ahead, but I feared getting a guilt trip later on in the day. But we had a fun time while running, we were actually able to spend some relaxing quality time together.

Since, in the morning it was as cold as a witches tit, I ended up wearing my tear away pants at the start of the race. But once we got to State street, I got kind of hot so we pulled to the side and I ripped my pants off, tied them to my waist, and we went on our merry way. (I was wearing shorts under them.) We did a pretty good job for the remainder of the race. I got to see a lot of the city in a totally different perspective. At times it was like pulling teeth to get barb to pick it up, but she always did. I was proud of her for that. Towards the end of the race, we definitely picked it up, we passed a ton of people who passed us earlier though out the race.

Once we got to Columbus drive (where the finish line was), I felt like a kid on Christmas morning. I was excited to finish my first race. But my excitement suddenly turned to sadness when Barb said to me "you are never gone to beat me" and she pushed me down to the ground. Barb ran across the finish line laughing, and with a single tear drop falling from my face, I picked myself up, brushed myself off and crossed the finish line. (Parts of the finale of the race have been exaggerated to for dramatic effect.)Ok, the race really didn't end like that. Once we turned onto Columbus, Barb booked it for the finish line to get her new personal best, and I just leisurely and triumphantly
finished.

It was kind of cool, because 8 weeks ago, I never imagined myself being able to run a mile let alone 5. But I did it and feel pretty damn good about myself. After the race, we wandered around looking for Taylor for awhile, but had no look. Once we got home we took an after photo to preserve what we had accomplished.

The sad thing is I think I’m really starting to like this running thing. We actually signed up for the race to the taste in July. I am now a SERIOUS ATHLETE!!!

Total: 5 miles
Time: 1:03:43

That has to be one of the most unattractive photos we've ever taken. :)

I love you! You're the best. And a serious athlete who can kick my ass.

That's awesome! I was never a runner in any way until I started dating my now-wife, and I remember starting up from not being able to run a mile. Let me tell you, you got to 5 miles a lot faster than I did. Like, years faster.

But, you know, a mere 3 years later I finished the Chicago Marathon, but I still remember running 5 miles for the first time.

Great job and keep it up!
